His success should be the pinnacle of his career. He never expected it to threaten his life.

THE ALGORITHM BY CL WALKER

Neither of these sentences is very long. They don’t have too many specifics inside, but you have a positive sentiment followed by a bit of a twist. When you can provide a reader with the unexpected, even in a short 200-word blurb, you might just inspire them to click the Buy button as well. Note here that the semantically-charged words of “career” and “life” end both of those sentences. “Success” and “threats” also carry a fair bit of weight.

Another use of the quick twist is to introduce a villain or a conflict. I’m a big fan of using the quick twist in the third sentence of the first paragraph of a synopsis, once I’ve established the opening stakes for a character. I also love using it at the end of the synopsis, once the tension has been ratcheted up as high as possible.
